Okay, I gotta be honest here, the first time I saw Son of Rambo I actually didn't like it. I thought it was a bit too lively, too perky and without enough poignant moments to satisfy me. My view of the movie has changed however. I now enjoy it as a comical family film rather than a coming of age film. I think the genre switch helps me to appreciate the movie a bit more.
I recently watched it with a friend and I enjoyed even more. Then again it always helps to watch a movie with fresh eyes. I think the characters in the movie are particularly good, the acting is good too I believe. I particularly liked the bully character. At one point he can be someone honest and appealing, while at the next point he can look like a total and complete... well, you get the picture. Another main character does a particularly good job at appearing naïve, considering he's in a religious sect.
The two form an unlikely, slightly unusual, altogether interesting friendship. I really liked how the two worlds, which were completely opposite, collided in such a fashion that created the one the whole friendship. I'm not gonna sit here and proclaim that opposites attract, or that likeness attracts, I think that it can go either way, but in this situation it is a true case of opposites attract.
As the title implies one of the main characters, if you can guess which one, ends up creating a movie revolving around him as the "Son of Rambo." The bully character is the one with the camera and calls all the shots. This becomes clear the very beginning of the film, however this distinction becomes modeled in the middle of the movie in which the other main character becomes an icon among his classmates. Ultimately the tides change in the naïve character ends up calling the shots. Unfortunately this does not go so well and it causes a clash with the other character that becomes quite apparent, rather quickly.
Generally I don't go for comedies. I'm not saying that this movie stands out as a critical comedy piece, but I did think there were parts of it that were funny. They're certain kinds of comedy that don't appeal to me. Stuff you'd see in Austin Powers is not particularly appealing to me. I'm also not sure that I follow my old British humor thing.
In the end I like the main point of the movie. I think the name for the movie is simply the friendship the boys have. I think that the movie they are creating is merely a façade complicating the whole matter of their friendship. Now I'm sure that isn't intentional, but ultimately that's what in the doing. In the end of the movie the friendship is restored, thankfully, because this movie would just suck if it had a crappy ending. This is a one of those movies I'd like to see with the cliffhanger ending, or with a sour ending might I add.
